Peace, Globalization and Intercultural communication

Peace is a desire that all the world fighting for, and the main reason it  doesn’t anymore, is that we are fighting for, which is the exact opposite of peace! Instead of trying to understand others and work on the real problem we have, instead of trying to apply globalization in its correct form; we tend to change others to follow our rules and views, but how then peace can be achieved in that world!?

Internal peace is an essential first step to achieving peace in the world. How do you cultivate it? It’s very simple. In the first place by realizing clearly that all mankind is one and that human beings in every country are members of one and the same family, this was the Dalai Lama point of view about human beings and different cultures, and how it all starts from you and inside cultivation (self-cultivation). Having different cultures should be strength rather than weakness since it was proven that diversity in any field leads to better results , starting from that point we agree that different cultures and having different ethics and religions should act as a covalent bond between these different cultures rather than a barrier. As Kofi Annan said “We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.”

After having this kind of belief and internal cultivation we can be ready to accept others and communicate with them in a balanced way. The major differences like ethnocentrism, language barriers & cultural diversity can be easily broken.

Ethnocentrism  , which represents taking culture of your own group as the reference or as the standard and referring to it when looking to other cultures or groups with your eyes rather than their eyes all lead to a relativity state ; And based on that the judgment for other cultures can never be fair enough. For my point of view, if this other group or cultures don’t break any of the physical constants over earth (like nature, sex, ecosystems…etc) it will be hard to judge if this culture or group act in a correct way or need to change, since you will never have the ability to do this while you are enclosed into your own group or culture. Such a belief will force you to accept others without a clear reason more than that you can’t judge them fairly (unless as stated before based on physical constants). To make it clear, you can judge a group of people negatively if they do eat human flesh, but you can’t if they talk in a different way or eat a certain type of spicy food!

The other issue that can be raised; the language difference. It  doesn’t  affect how you see others more than how you can understand them and get there point clearly without any noise , as the model of communication contains language it is considered one of the most important part of communication and the one that contains most of the disturbance and noise in the act of communication. The only way to avoid it is either communicating with a common language as English or learning other cultures languages (which would be hard unless you will be living within this culture). Originally language was created to make it easier to communicate with other human being, but after different versions of it, such difference started to raise problems. Especially when some phrases or words can be miss understood or have different meaning in the other language, hence you have to speak clearly and direct if you are communicating with someone from other culture or language source.

Cultural diversity, which is a major reason behind the difficulties in intercultural communication, is caused mainly by all the above reasons adding to it the difference in religion & the geographic effect on the human behavior or acts. Culture mainly dictates the values , for our attitudes & modifies our behavior , values part are mainly not that diverse since it’s based on the human nature , while other parts (as attitudes & behaviors) varies a lot due to the reasons explained above. Cultural stereotyping is as well a big problem. Although a lot of common attitudes and behaviors exist between people from same culture; still there is a special and human related attitudes & behaviors based on how the human raised and the surroundings. Although as mentioned above values  doesn’t  change that much but based on some studies (as Hofstede) it can be different and encounter changes. Hofstede mentioned that there is 4 dimensions of cultural variability, Individualism Vs Collectivism , Masculinity Vs Femininity , Low Vs High Power Distance & Uncertainty avoidance. Still such study is not that perfect since it was made based on IBM workers and not including blue collar workers, this proves that it’s impossible to do a perfect theory about human behavior and culture differences.

On the other hand, Trompenaars & Hampden-Turner theory is considered as a dynamic process of solving human problems and diversities in the field of human relationships, times & nature. Dividing it to 7 dimensions of culture it discussed the human behavior and reaction and categorized them. In my point of view making more theories might support in analyzing on the human level more than cultural level. Applying such theories over a culture will represent more and encourage the stereotyping process.

Finally as Friedrich Nietzsche mentioned “At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.”.  We need to live together and such diversity must exists and that was the reason people were created or evolved from different cultures and beliefs so that they can merge together and form one unity strong enough to survive and to develop the world.
